Who’s got it worse? Me or Jack?

Whenever I was feeling sorry for myself while pregnant with Sam - not like a serious sorry for myself but like a, “Oh I’m so tired and gassy and sick of my job and bloated and fat and ugly and it sucks,” sort of way - I would watch one of the Lord of The Rings movies. Frodo had it bad, he really did. Has to leave home to do this damn quest that he didn’t even sign up for, bear the weight of that blasted ring, sleep on the edge of rock cliffs, leave his friends, get stabbed by Ringwraith blades…man, it’s rough. I knew that no matter how I was feeling I didn’t have it as bad as Frodo and should therefore feel good about my situation. During my third trimester when my hands and feet broke out in unbearable itchy rashes that were untreatable due to the dangers of the drugs to the baby I watched a whole lot of LOTR, but by then I was taking it much more seriously and I really wasn’t sure that Frodo did have it so bad. At least when Frodo went to sleep on that rock cliff he didn’t lay there scratching his feet until they bled…anyway…

I’m not sure yet, because we still aren’t caught up with the new season, but I think my pity character for this pregancy will be Jack Bauer. I mean, seriously, dude returns after spending two years being tortured in a Chinese prison only to find out he will now be handed over to another group who wants to torture him to death and he is sacrificed for the country that abandoned him…several times. Rough. I guess I shouldn’t feel so bad about the fact that my farts make me gag and want to vomit.

Am I the only one that does this? Do others have characters that they fall back on to comfort them in times of pregnant misery? If so, who are they? I love a good pity party.
And I suppose I should explain where the heck I’ve been:

I know, ridiculous. It has been so long. Everything is fine. We are alive and I appreciate those of you who have contacted me to make sure things are ok. We’ve just had a whole lot of sickness going around. Not even a week passed after that Norwalk virus thing before Sam came down with a fever and a bad cold, and then I caught it. And we STILL have it. It’s now been two weeks. We’re recovering but it seriously feels like we’ve been sick all winter. We’ve been trapped in the house, which is not good for one’s psyche, especially when we get very little sunlight in here, and it’s just been kind of rough. Top it off with the constant morning sickness nausea and you’ve got a pretty good sense of what’s going on over here. But we are alive and even heard the babe’s heartbeat today, so all is well.

  2. Yeah… Sarah, Abrahams wife… y’know, really old and preggers. Some scholars say the woman was in her 70’s. Dude, I’m in my mid 30’s and the thought of being pregnant makes me want to crawl under a rock. Sarah is my pity foil.

  4. nice to see you are back. at least for the moment. i’m so so sorry about all the sickies. yuck. no one (in my opinion) should have to endure any other kind of ailment on TOP of morning sickness. it’s just wrong. you should get some major payback for that.

i know it’s maybe cheesy or something, but when i feel whiney, i think of women who can’t have kids. i know a couple. these are people who would pay top dollar and give anything they have to feel the nausea i feel. so, that’s how i keep myself in check. but don’t get me wrong. i do complain. a lot. and then i crank up another gilmore girls episode.

  5. My pity characters come in book form: The Zion Chronicles by Brock and Bodie Thoene. In total, there are 10+ books in the series. They follow WWII with rich detail.

The “itchy rash”–is it a one-off or could it happen again? ouch, ouch, ouch!!!

Hey, let me know what you think of “The Lost Girls”. I read it a couple of years ago and it was…different than I anticipated. I loved “The Fourth Bear”! have you read “The Well of Lost Plots”? JF is such a fun writer.

  7. I so feel for you. I remember having a cold while pregnant and thinking it was just the worst. It cannot be much easier with a toddler. Glad to hear from you, I was starting to get worried!

  8. I’m glad you’re feeling better. Being pregnant is always a new challenge, isn’t it?

my husband and I were laughing today because the boys love to play all the Legend of Zelda games and he was laughing saying that I always played the games while I was pregnant or nursing them, so they’re comforted by the music and I had to laugh - it’s true!

  9. So sorry…it’s so hard being sick AND pregnant and caring for a toddler. Especially one who’s sick. Been there, done that…twice. I feel for you.

When I’m feeling particularly sorry for myself, I look at EVERYTHING I’m blessed with that so many people would love to have. And I think about what my grandmother might have gone through having 4 girls in 4 years and ended up raising them on her own. And I think of my great-grandmother who had 13 children 80 years ago when things weren’t as convenient as they are now. I can’t imagine how those women did it!

Anyway, {{{HUGS}}} to you. I hope you all feel much better real soon.

  10. Ok I would have to say any character that has a massive parasite in his intestine that is causing swelling of the midsection just like mine.
I have a five weeks left to deliver and I am miserable! I am right there with you on the confined to the indoors. There are only so many times you can watch The Elmo Movie before you want to search the neighborhood for a crack pipe and a good “first timer” deal.
We are on the three week schedule of illness. Every three weeks we are all sick. I really need to bye stock in Baby Motrin, and children’s Dymatap. Hope you are feeling better soon!

  11. Sorry to hear about you guys being sick. We’ve been in that boat too, still recovering. Seems like every blog I read has the same problem. We’re all sick! Hang in there, get well soon.

  14. Does it help to hear “this too shall pass?” … probably not, but anyway, I can say I know what you’re going through!!!!

  15. I love that you call upon Frodo to summon your strength to get through! :) I never thought of having a pity character to make me feel better about my own lot in life….hmmm….this will take some thinking about….

We’re sick too — what else is new? We haven’t gotten above 5 degrees in about a week (haven’t gotten above zero in the 3 days), so those germs are having a field day with us too….glad to hear baby is plugging away, nice and strong. Take care of yourself, and I hope you’re all feeling better soon!

  17. I was so miserable when I was pregnant, if I got pregnant again (after I almost died) I’d have to say my character would be Paula Abdul because she’s totally crazy in the head! LOL.

  18. I am so sorry you’ve been feeling so cruddy. It’s good to hear from you. Just the mention of farts made me laugh.

  19. Hello, bodily functions, how are you? It’s almost been a week!

    Comment by sari — February 7, 2007 @ 4:44 pm

  20. Phew! I am glad you are okay. I have been on a little hiatus as well. When do we get to see pictures of your baby bump? I haven’t ever found a person whose misery I could revile in. When I am pregnant the sound of the television makes me vomit as do words in books. It is nice to know that you have found someone so that you don’t feel quite so miserable.

    I do not heart pregnancy.
