Go Ahead - If you DARE!!!

I find it fascinating that I can post about my horrific experience with a slow cooker recipe . . . and that you all still asked for the recipe! And the rest of you asked what I had done wrong! I resent that, ladies. I mean, who says I was the problem, huh? What makes you think I can’t follow a recipe, anyway?

And so, I challenge you all to try out the overnight oatmeal recipe from a few days ago. It’s the weekend, the perfect time to wake up and have breakfast all done so you can relax in the morning, so have at it - you probably have all the ingredients you need already. Here’s the recipe I FOLLOWED PERFECTLY:

1/4 C. brown sugar, packed

1 T. butter, melted

1/4 t. salt

1/2 t. cinnamon

1 C. quick -cooking oats, uncooked

1 C. apple, cored, peeled, and minced

1/2 C. raisins

1/2 C. chopped nuts

2 C. milk

Place ingredients in greased slow cooker; mix well. Cover and cook on low setting overnight, about 8-9 hours. Makes 4 servings.

All right, in fairness I didn’t use the nuts, but as inept as I am, I’m thinking that did not lead to the mass of burnt oatmeal.

So go for it, ladies; I dare you. Heck, maybe I’ll even give it another go this weekend, once I get more oatmeal . . . since we’re out . . . due to this recipe. And by all means, let me know how it goes! If you want, I’ll even post links to anyone who gives this a try and blogs about it - I will require pictures, of course (maybe I’ll even set up one of those little linky things that everyone uses, assuming I can figure out how). I don’t know if I want you all to succeed, which would make me look like a jackass who can’t follow a simple slow cooker recipe, but would also tell me what the heck went wrong, or if I want to be able to link to several other pictures of crock pots that look like this.

At least I’d know it wasn’t me. My crock pot is still sitting in my sink soaking, by the way. We’ve had several rounds of scrubbing.

Slow cook on, gals, slow cook on. I wish you all a night of apple pie smells and cinnamon dreams. But just to be safe, I wouldn’t tell your kids about it until you’ve actually checked under the lid. I’m just sayin’ . . .

  1. I might do this tonight.

Except I have old fashioned oats. And I hate nuts and raisins. So I’ll add extra apple—which could add moisture.

    Will my modified version count?

I think you should buy a new crockpot.

  2. had i a slow cooker, i’d be all in!

  3. You know what, go for it, Gretch- modifications will be accepted. Let’s see if we can actually get a decent recipe out of this thing!

  4. I was thinking I would try this until I remembered that I don’t have a slow cooker. Our apartment here in Spain is furnished, but not that furnished. Hubby actually mentioned getting one. Maybe I should give the go ahead if it means he will continue to do the cooking now that he started working. I’m so happy to have internet again and will be catching up and watching out for the result of the oatmeal recipe.

  5. I am Busting UP!!! I think oatmeal does sound good. But looks on that one are everything!

  6. How funny! Love the blog header by the way. Perfect!

  7. Meh… am the only one in my family who likes oatmeal, and NOBODY wants me to be eating oatmeal in my condition; there is not enough Beano in the world to control this “Little Chernobyl” I like to call my GI tract.

  8. Ummmmm, tempting but I think I’ll pass. I’ve had enough failures without trying to follow a proven one. :-)
