Everyone Needs a Valentine’s Post

I still remember the Disney Valentine’s Day special, the one with little vignettes of the characters from all the different movies falling in love. I associate it with Campbell’s soup for some reason - must have been some very good advertising to still be working so many years later. I also remember making my little Valentine’s Day bag at school, the one that would be used to collect cards from my classmates. I can see the big pink construction paper heart glued over a white paper doily, and then stuck to a brown paper bag. Cupcakes with pink frosting. The little candy hearts with messages that never really tasted good but I ate them anyway.

I also remember writing my Valentine cards for my classmates when I was very young. I’d have the sheets of cards displaying favorite characters (probably of the Disney variety) that needed to be punched out and assigned appropriately. This was a difficult task that required careful planning. You see, one couldn’t just jump right in and start writing names on the cards because they all had different messages. I had to make sure that best friends received my favorite cards, but more importantly that I didn’t get down to the end of the batch with a few boys I didn’t like left on the list and three cards that all said something like, “My heart flips for you!” and a picture of Minnie swooning with hearts in her eyes. 1. Yes, I’m now remembering that this is a great holiday for kids. After my girls finished making valentines for their friends, they spent two more hours making bags for home and more valentines for each other. It’s great to see the love!

  2. I couldn’t seem to comment over there, so I’ll just comment here instead. Miss A had her Valentine’s party on Wednesday and was delighted by all of her Valentine’s cards. “Mommy look!!! This one is from my movie!!!” The coolest on she received (in my opinion) was a Spiderman one that moved. Know what I mean, when you move the card Spiderman looks like he’s swinging towards you? What’s that called? I want to say ‘hologram’ but I know that’s wrong.
