“Oh, Ha!”

Robby doesn’t say the word “Yes.” It’s not in his vocabulary. Instead he has always said “Ha.”

“Do you want more milk?”

“Ha.”

“Ready for bed?”

“Ha.”

I don’t know how it began. Soon after he started talking he started saying “Ha,” and we quickly learned what he meant. I guess we reinforced it, because now, just one month short of two years old (how did that happen?!), he still says it many times a day. I don’t even really notice it anymore. It’s only when he is around someone who doesn’t know about “Ha” asks him a question, gets the response, and then stares at me blankly that I realize it’s his own little language.

When asked if he can say “Yes,” he replies: “Ha.” When asked if he will, he says “No.”

And “Ha” is not only his one-word reply; he uses it in sentences as well.

“Robby, don’t forget to put your shoes in the basket.”

“Oh, ha.”

“No, Robby, you may not play with that hammer and bang it on the wall.”

“Ha hammoh! Ha!”

I have to admit I really like it. I’m not doing much (read: I’m not doing anything at all) to change it. Somehow it works with his personality - a boy who’s so happy (most of the time) that even his most basic words sound like laughter.

  1. I love “ha,” too. So so so cute. And why would you try to change it?

When Audrey was little, she said “yohn-yuh” for “water.” Don’t ask me why. And then one day mom mom bent down and said to her “Waaaahhh-terrr. Say waahhhh-terrrr.” And she never said yohn-yuh again. I was so sad. :(

  2. That is really adorable. Two. Already. Holy.

Miss A has been saying “her has this” and “her is that” for some time. I have recently started reminding her that “SHE has this” and “SHE is that” which she can say and will correct when I remind her but forgets and goes back to her old ways. I guess she’ll grow out of it. Like sucking her thumb.

  3. I wouldn’t do anything to change it, either. It’ll work it’s way out too soon, as it is.

You get to the point where you kinda miss those sweet, unique words that they had.

  4. So cute… and fun. (although maybe because I tend to live a tad on the sarcastic side.) maybe the next time my little girl asks to go outside and play I will just respond with “Ha!” :)

  5. Love it! My guy is fond of saying “sure!” as a response and the New Englander in me is glad he pronounces it “my” way and not the philly/jersey “shore” way. ;-)

That’s an adorable picture of the two of them!

  6. Woah two!! crazy how fast it goes! I am struggling with mine getting older.

  7. Excuse me? Two? You are right … how the heck did that happen? It seems just like yesterday some moments doesn’t it?

What a precious family you have!

  8. For the longest time Jayce used “hunt” for milk. No idea why. But it was cute. The speech therapist had her way with him and now it’s more like “hilt”. I think it’s pretty cute too. And now that he’s “graduated” from speech, look like this one’s here to stay!

  9. [...] we woke up this morning, “Ha” was gone. In its place was a well-pronounced “Yeah.” I fully admit I’m sad to see [...]
