Yudd

George This is “Yudd.” You may know him as Curious George, but to Robby’s unpracticed vocalizations he is called “Yudd,” or “Yode,” and sometimes “Yudge.”

Yudd is a toy that my husband got sometime in college, a play on a nickname he had on his ultimate frisbee team, I believe, since you’ll see that this George is wearing an astronaut suit and Hubby was known as “Space Monkey.” Athletes, they’re so weird. Anyway . . .

George's suit Robby sleeps with Yudd. And kisses him. And has me kiss them both goodnight. And when he sleeps he holds him with both hands right under his chin and sort of nestles his head down on Yudd’s.If he wakes up and can’t find him he calls, “Yudd! Yudd! No Yudd!”

Try as I might, Sam never had a lovey other than his toy cars, so this is something totally new for me to see. That Robby chose one of the few toys in this house that was not initially intended for either of the boys seems perfect somehow. Something about the way he can wrap both hands around Yudd’s neck and head I think is appealing to him. Where Robby found him in our house, I have no idea. But that he did so and made this attachment all on his own tells me their connection is genuine.

So now I suppose the trick is to make sure he is never lost, because there truly is only one Yudd. He could also use a good cleaning.

  1. My niece’s lovey was a pair of adult slippers that were dalmation puppies. She got attatched to one of them, and my brother and his wife never let on that it was a pair. So whenever one needed washing…presto, there was another one miraculously clean! If one got lost…same deal. Eventually she got old enough to wise up and demand the other one and my brother’s scheme was foiled.

  2. Awww… :)

When I was five or so, my mom caved to my grandmother insisting that the soft lining on my blanket be replaced. That blanket was never the same. My mom never quite forgave herself for doing it.

That last bit is not really related to anything, but this post made me think of it.

  3. My beloved Baby Beansy (the blue talking Baby Beans on this site http://www.dollinfo.com/babybeans.htm) accidently fell into the toilet on the Jersey Turnpike! You can imagine the hustling my mom had to do to find a new one and convince me that Baby Beansy had been cleaned. From then on I believe she kept a spare.

  4. My daughter has her own version of your Yudd. She also carries her around all the time everywhere we go. Well, mothers will surely understand if they’ll see how old looking the doll looks like. Thanks for sharing. By the way, there’s a new social networking site dedicated to parents and kids, it’s called Bluepixo.com - it’s a place for Moms, Dads, and Kids! Now, there’s even a chance to win a free iPod Nano!. It would be so nice of you to join our parents’ forums and polls. Thanks a lot and have a great day!

  5. hopefully he maintains his appeal after his bath… (and stays together. :) )

  6. Am I insane to think that I can see how happy Yudd is to be loved in his eyes? (Bath, schmath….it’s part of his charm. :))

  7. I think that is so sweet - especially so as it was your hubby’s first right? My daughter has become very attached to a dolly that I had when I was little. My grandma had knitted me a dolly upon my birth and that dolly went everywhere with me, although upon teenagehood, she travelled in boxes stuffed in the back of closets. When we were unpacking from our move last year, we stumbled upon dolly, whom my daughter quickly swiped and has never let go since. Dolly too needs a good clean however she just might fall apart in the process. Somehow, just knowing that it was mine from early days makes the bond between daughter and doll that much more precious. And like your first born, my son never had much that we was “attached” to, so the whole experience is an endearing one.
