Rainbows in Clouds

****Edited below****

If you are in an area that is cloudy and generally dreary today, here’s a cool project that I saw on Misty’s blog this morning that is sure to brighten up your day. Not to mention that it’s a great activity for the kids to work on with you, sorting colors, making stacks, and handing books down the line to be re-shelved. Oh, and of course massive dusting and cleaning of the shelves to start . . .

A much bigger project would be to attack the downstairs “office,” aka: my husband’s man cave. That’s where we have most of our books, including his ridiculous collection of comics. I actually think it would look really cool down there since there are several book shelves, but I don’t know if it will ever happen since it would mean that my husband would have to be willing to separate individual books from their collections. GASP!

*** Any one who was here before may have noticed that I changed the photo after making a few minor changes. Hubby very subtly let me know that he couldn’t stand that there were a few gray books on the black shelf by diplomatically reminding me of where my Twilight series was, which “Are great for black.” Fair enough. It looks better now.

I also added some little items including the amazing shell that Sam found the first day we were at the shore. Isn’t it amazing? I almost cried.

  1. I’m dying for my books to look like this! First I have to dig them out of the basement, then organize them (after checking for parasites, of course),and then get a new bookshelf, and then, and then, and then

  2. Spine color is actually the best way to sort books that don’t easily separate into categories (such as technical books, which line my shelf).

The human mind is particularly sensitive to remembering color, so when you are looking for a specific book and get a picture of it in your mind, the color of the book is one of the first things you recall.

I’ve had my bookshelves sorted by spine color for years, and it’s great. ;)

  3. That looks fantastic. I love the effect.

  4. Wheels turning, glancing at the bookcase six feet away, do I dare?

  5. i LOVE it!!!! You did fantastic! :)
My husband looked over my shoulder and said “hey, she has all of the Twilight books too!” :)

  6. Oh but then all of your harry potter books are not next to each other in chronological order. I love how it looks but don’t know if my anally retentive brain can take it!

  7. Prettiest books ever! :)

  8. GORGEOUS! (This from a woman who color sorts her M&Ms prior to consumption… ;) )

  9. What a FANTASTIC IDEA!!!
It’s so simple, and fun, and looks great!

This is one of those ideas that you think to yourself-
“why haven’t I thought of that before?”

    Love it.

  10. I was going to say that I really loved the 4th shelf, left side. :)
