Gnome Home

I remember growing up that I was fascinated with gnomes. I had a book of gnomes, one I wish I could find, that had illustrations of various gnomes and their homes. One page stands out in memory specifically, a drawing of a forest and meadow, and the reader was to practice using their “gnome eyes” to spot the deer hidden in the brush. I loved it.

We also had a few little gnome statues that were placed at the base of a tree in our backyard. One was a boy whose legs bent to sit on a log, and the other was a little girl gnome.

When my parents moved a few years ago they went through tons of stuff, I’m sure. And among the relics they found the little gnome girl, who was then passed back to me.

The boys have been fascinated by her ever since, so we all thought it would be appropriate to make a little home for her at the base of a tree in the yard.

Sam and Robby like to leave little offerings for her of things they think she’d like, so they put pretty leaves, acorns and flowers in their sand shovel outside her door. I think one day soon she might leave something for them there in return.

  6. I definitely think she should leave something for your boys in return of their generosity. I hope you share what she does!

  7. I also have a weakness for gnomes. Have you seen Amelie? Cutest movie ever and it also has a gnome which makes it even better. :)

  8. Love this. My kids would be thrilled with leaving little tokens and someday getting something in return. Do it! We build fairy houses in our yard and come back the next day to see if it looks like they slept there overnight and if any of the leaves/flowers/sticks etc are in new places :)

  9. yay for gnomes! i’ve been needle felting some. magical little people, they are.

  10. And I thought I was the only under 60 person who loved Gnomes.
I swear, they are impish little things and mine moves about the flower bed often.
That is until his head got broken off my my other little impish thing of a child.
But, I can’t bring myself to throw him away.
Each time I pass by him, I carefully put his head back on his shoulders, and often times I think he really does say thank you.

    Crazy?

  11. When I was growing up I had a neighbor who had a yard full of gnomes. There were so many that most people considered it an eye-sore. As a six year old, I loved it. It reminded me of a fantasy world. Needless to say, I love your gnome home. I should get each of my children their own gnomes for Christmas. They would love to build homes for them.
