Morimoto Mommy

Once upon a time, not so long ago, it was Hubby and me. Me and Hubby. And that’s it; it was just the two of us. And when it was just us, we used to do Hubby and me things like, say, watching an entire season of 24 within a one week time span . . . going to a movie and deciding as we walked out of the theater to turn around and go see another . . . playing Dance Dance Revolution in 5 hour stretches. Yeah. We did.

We also watched Iron Chef, a lot of it. No, not the American version that is on now. We watched the old-school Japanese version, the real one with the awesomely campy voice dubs and an introduction that ALWAYS started with, “If memory serves me right . . .”

This one.

It’s great stuff. Truly. Ha! just listening to the video play is cracking me up. You have to watch the part where he bites the pepper and then sort of laughs at himself at minute 5. And just FYI, I did actually see this episode I’m linking to; I remember it.

Anyway, if you watch the video, or if you happen to have been another avid viewer of the show (seriously, did anyone else watch this), then you know who Chef Morimoto is - He’s Iron Chef Japanese! He’s a sushi expert. He was our fave. Watch his ascension into Kitchen Stadium to the overly dramatic opera vocals at minute 7.

Ok, so, after our long love relationship with Iron Chef, we eventually had kids (yep, Iron Chef love children). And we eventually did not have Food Network. And so Iron Chef was no more (plus I don’t think they make it anymore).

But…BUT, (and here’s where you’re really going to find out how fanatical we were about the show…and about sushi…and how kind of demented we are…), when we found out we were going to be moving to Philly one of the first things Hubby and I pointed out as a major “pro” of our new area would be access to MORIMOTO RESTAURANT, which happens to be in Philadelphia.

So we moved here. And then we didn’t go.

I know. It’s sad, right? But we have small children. And it’s downtown. And it’s expensive. And sitters are expensive. You all know how these things happen. Sad, but true.

But then, OHBUTTHEN, PEOPLE, I got an email from MomCentral a few weeks ago inviting me to go to a night of celebrating moms in May at . . .

MOOO-REEEEEE-MOTOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Ha! Hahahahahahaha!

Now, of course I had to ask Hubby if he’d be cool with me going without him. And he was. Because he’s wonderful that way. And because it’s free.

Ahem, so, um yeah. I’m going to Morimoto tonight. There will obviously be more on this later with lots of photos and such.

But first, what does one wear when they are “free to dress up” and will be at a swanky downtown locale, but also fully expects to essentially eat one’s weight in raw fish?

  1. Cute story! I’m so glad you’re going. :-) I have never had raw fish. Shhhhh… I know. It’s sad. I’m wearing white jeans with heels and a blousy tank top that allows lots of room for trying all different kinds of raw fish.

  2. Have fuuuuuuuuun! I wish I could go with you, but 1. the idea of raw fish kind of grosses me out (do they cook anything there?) and 2. the idea of being a train and car ride away from the hospital at 38 weeks kind of freaks me out (even though there is NO WAY this child is coming early or even on time). I can’t wait to hear ALLLL the details.

  3. We got engaged at Morimoto’s…. Jealous? ;-)

  4. NO YOU DIDN’T!

  5. Yep! And then he took me to Cirque. I think that was our last “big” date! LOL!

  6. Something with an elastic waistband. Enjoy.

  7. Or something in an empire waist. I can’t wait to hear about it! We totally watched the Japanese IC back in the day too.

  8. We used to love IC, we were soooo excited when we first heard about Morimoto Philly… and we still haven’t gone together either. so much lameness… how was the raw fish?

  9. Have fun! Raw fish doesn’t appeal to me, but it sounds like a great time.
