Nausea Contest

It’s pretty amazing what our bodies can do when it’s time to kick into gear. For the past 2 weeks I’ve had fairly bad morning sickness in the afternoon and evenings especially. It seems I am always on the verge but never quite over the cliff if you take my meaning. It’s enough, though, to eliminate most food from smelling range and from sight in order to avoid that hurdle over the edge of the lovely white bowl. By the end of the day I don’t even want to be upright or moving for fear of jarring myself into true illness. It was the same way when I was pregnant with Sam - constant nausea with very little result.

Last night it was clear that something was wrong with Sam. It took a long time for him to fall asleep and once he did he woke up continuously needing to be soothed, much to our frustration as we tried to watch The DaVinci Code. Around 11:00 he started throwing up and this continued until about 9:00am this morning. We all camped out in the living room with an air mattress and towels once our bed was put out of commission. Throughout the course of the evening I was vomitted on at least 4 times and then slept (when we finally did sleep) with my face in my baby’s pukey head of hair (after 3 baths it seemed we just had to let go and do our best with each round). My point is this: I was not nauseous at any point of the evening. Tired, yes. Sad for Sam, totally. Did it reek? Absolutely! Were there chunks? You betcha! And I felt the healthiest I have been in weeks.

Why this had to be passed to Sam temporarily for my body to remember what relief felt like I have no idea. It seems it was just a quick virus. But I can tell you that between him and me I’m glad to be sitting here, as still as possible, drinking my ginger ale. When I picked up a blanket for myself just now I was assaulted with a rogue chunk and its odor, and I tell ya that nearly sent me over that edge. Must not move…must hold together…And Sam is in his clean bed sleeping soundly again, as it should be.

Meanwhile I am on laundry load 5, I believe.

******Edited to add: No sooner had I hit ‘publish’ than I heard Sam on the monitor saying, “uh oh, uh oh.” I got in there just in time for him to throw up all over himself and his “clean bed.” He seems to be going from one extreme to another, feeling awful one moment and dancing on the couch the next hour. I hope the vomiting is done before we go to bed tonight. And he seems to have lost the warning whine before he throws up, so now we all have a nice element of surprise.

Load 7…

  1. oh boy do i feel for you. when i was pregnant i began feeling nauseous almost right away and it didn’t go away until about 6 months into the pregnancy. yes, i was nauseated almost my whole pregnancy. good times! but i never, not once sealed the deal. but, wow, did i want to. sweet relief. or at least i hoped it would be.

  2. When my little guy had a stomach bug oh my lord did it reek. I can only imagine what it must be like to smell that pregnant. Its amazing that your body gave you a break like that.

  3. Oh my gosh. I think I just threw up myself. Why oh why must you be such a descriptive writer? :) Seriously, Patrick has never thrown up for real. Yet. And I’m pretty sure that might be the day I quit this job. I’m so sorry for your night.

  4. This gives me hope that I can deal with that sort of thing if/when I have to when I am pregnant again and if I am sick again.

Sorry that you had to deal with that though. It’s bad enough to have a sick kid but a sick kid when you are sick too, sucks.

  5. Poor little guy. That is so rough when they’re throwing up.

As you say, it is so amazing what our bodies can do when our children need us. I hope your morning sickness doesn’t last past the first trimester. (How many weeks are you now?) Do you have the prescription drug ‘diclectin’ there? It did wonders for me.

  6. Ugh, poor little guy. I was just as sick as him last week. And I remember the awful nausea of my first trimester. Here’s hoping your first trimester passes quickly so you can get to the better times of the second trimester. I feel so much better than I did two months ago.

  7. Poor kid…hope he’s better. Sorry you’re in limbo…I think that sucks more than actually BEING sick. I, too, had the “almost but, not quite there” while I was pregnant and I HATED it. Hope you’re all able to sleep. Stay healthy…happy baby building :)

  8. Sam, get better little guy! Hang in there mama! We went through that a couple weeks ago with both kids. Amazing the amount of laundry you have to try and keep up with.

Yes, when emergencies arise, our mommy bodies stand up to the test. Here’s to EVERYONE feeling better soon!

  9. As I read that last, edited paragraph it was as if I could see him saying that and then throwing up, having heard the same thing so many times. It’s funny, as much as a germ freak as I am and I difficult it is for me to deal with yucky things, I’ve never had a problem cleaning up after my kids when they’re sick, they’re just so sad and sick and pathetic it’s all about sympathy and mother love.

  10. Awww, i hope you both feel better soon and that the tummy bug doesn’t spread through the household!

  11. I had the non-stop morning sickness for the first three months with Five. Thankfully it cleared up after that, but I feel for you.

Congratulations on your new site, I’ll update my blog link.

Also, sorry about Sam. I hope he’s feeling better. I’ve been thrown up on plenty of times myself, as has my bed. Five is our resident projectile vomiter - he went 8 feet once down the hallway last year, so at least be glad you don’t have that.

Not funny then, I know, but funny now.

Sending good thoughts for recovery!! :-)

  12. Sick kids and pg do not mix. I had that same thing happen with Cam when I was pg this last time. It was so awful! And then I got sick myself. Morning sickness and flu together are the worst! I hope he feels better soon and hang in there!

  13. Oooo… so sorry. We had our first round of that business for the first time in almost a year last week… but it was our almost five year old (who can manage to do her business in a large mixing bowl) and it was mercifly short. A mere singleton in terms of laundry!

Sorry, not gloating… just commiserating in an annoying manner.

  14. Oh No! Poor Sam! Poor You! Kaelen has always been a projectile puker from day one so our house has been christened in every crook and cranny. Thankfully though - Mommy was always feeling good to have to deal with that. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for you with dealing with the nausea on top of all of this!

Perhaps I am having sympathy gags for you? Just now, at 32 weeks I have been feeling nauseous in the mornings …… And here I thought that I paid my dues when pregnant with Kaelen as it was so severe for 6 months …. :)

  15. Ooh I am one of those that gags just seeing someone throw up on TV… I can’t imagine “my face in my baby’s pukey head of hair” as you said. Luckily Avery has never thrown up, I don’t know what I will do when she does. Call her dad to action I guess!

  16. My 1-year old is just recovering from throwing up and pooping a lot. I just read in the papers that there is a high number of throwing up and pooping going around in the US, affecting everyone of all ages. (I got infected, too but fully recovered now).

You do have to ask the doctor about it, but yogurt with live and active culture in them helps, especially with my 1-year old.

  17. You poor poor thing! I had the stomach bug on New Year’s eve and thus far my kids have escaped unscathed. I am keeping my fingers tightly crossed that the luck continues!!

  18. I had to come back and tell you, if you want to, I’ve tagged you!

  19. Beth! I used to read your blog all the time, but got out of blogging for a while. Congrats on being pregnant and so sorry Sam is sick. I once did 21 loads of laundry in 4 days when my kids were sick. Not fun.

  20. I am finding that the smell of my dear little Hunter is making me nauseous these days.. aack!!! Thanks for the comment.

  21. You poor thing! I hope everyone has recovered!
