That’s Funny, I didn’t know it was possible to burn something in a slow cooker…

It was a grand idea, brilliant even. Last night I decided I would follow one of the recipes in a slow cooker cookbook to put together some overnight oatmeal for breakfast the next day. It would be great; I could just get up in the morning and spoon it out to everyone - no work first thing in the morning. Most importantly, I could prove to all you blog friends that I can actually cook, despite what some recent events might imply. Because, really, I’m quite a good cook. I am. At least I thought I was . . . until this morning, when I accomplished the impossible in culinary mishaps.

Before bed I put all of the ingredients into the slowcooker: oatmeal, brown sugar, milk, apple, etc. I set it on low, as directed. I went to bed. I was awakened multiple times by my teething baby, and with each waking I noticed the lovely aroma of cinamon and apple oatmeal. It made our sleepless night almost bearable as Hubby and I looked forward to eating a breakfast that smelled like apple pie. By around 4:00am I didn’t notice the nice smell anymore, but I figured I’d just gotten used to it.

When we all woke up this morning, late, due to the events of the evening, we started telling Sam about our special breakfast we’d be having this morning. He got very excited, and we all headed downstairs ready for our yummy goodness. When I entered the kitchen I noticed a lack of the yummy smell that had allured me all night, but I wasn’t really worried. I mean, it’s in a slow cooker, right? How can anything go wrong with a slow cooker? I mean, sure, it was in there a little longer than the 8-9 hours the recipe suggested, but c’mon. What’s the worst that can happen?

When Sam sat down at the table, I heard the dreaded, “What’s that fmell?

  1. o beth! no! how can it be!?!? did you not put the amount of water that was called for? i do that all the time.

  2. I have the same problem with cracked wheat… it ALWAYS scorches. Bleah.

  3. Awww man….you’re the second person (the first being my mother) who had a scorch incident in her slow-cooker…and interestingly, hers is also that oval shape….hmmm……could geometry be interfering with prescribed cook times?

Girl, you call Rival or Hamilton Beach! ;)

(What WAS that fmell? ;) )

  4. I had no idea either!!! Wow!

  5. Oh MY GOSH!!! I’ve never seen such a thing! That’s terrible! Honestly, though, I’m glad it’s you and not me because I’ve had enough of those types of incidences. If I had done that, I don’t think my hubby would ever let me in the kitchen again. ;)

  6. That sucks…I keep meaning to use the slow cooker more often since it is less work, great flavor, and uses less energy/heat.

  7. That sounds like it would’ve been a delicious breakfast! Would you like to share the recipe?

  8. I’m so sorry your breakfast didn’t work out! Especially after such a rough night!

i agree with Jenn, I’d love to see the recipe!

  9. i kid you not, I made Spaghetti sauce in mine today and all day kept asking myself “can this burn???”

Hmmm…. So, what went wrong? So sad…

  10. Hmmm. Bummer. I’m sure it would have been delicious! Maybe next time!

  11. This si good to know…but sorry it had to happen for the first meal of the day! You know instead of some random recipe you were trying for the heck of it, in the middle of the day!

  12. Oh, no. So disappointing! What did you eat instead?

I wonder what went wrong? I’ve thought about trying one of those crockpot breakfasts, but now I’m scared.

    I demand an investigation.

  13. Oh, what a bummer. That tis so something that I would screw up.I can’t cook a decent pancake to save my life.

  14. I hate to say it but this point made me giggle!
I had no idea something like that could even happen.

  15. [...] find it fascinating that I can post about my horrific experience with a slow cooker recipe . . . and that you all still asked for the recipe! And the rest of you asked what I had done wrong! [...]

  16. [...] Hubby is currently wrapping my gifts, which gives me a few moments to share this with you. We all remember “What’s that smell?” right? And then there was the equally impressive “What’s That Fmell?” [...]
