A Beginner’s Fall Vegetable Garden - Entry One
I planted our fall veggies last week. There are lots of transplants since I certainly was not thinking of starting seeds for the fall during our summer growing. So next year I’ll remember that and start early with seeds. I do find that planting seeds themselves is much more satisfying than transplanting already established plants from the store to the yard. It’s almost like cheating. But hey, can’t be picky when I’m the one that started so late!
So here we have our current fall garden . . . and Robby.
As you can see our Marigolds are still going strong, and I guess doing a great job of keeping pests away because I’ve had no problem with that.
Up front I’ve got Mesclun greens, Bibb lettuce, and Beets. And along the back edge we’re doing Brussels Sprouts, which I’m very excited about.
Then in the greenhouse I did go ahead and start some seeds for a few greens that have very short periods from planting to harvest - Arugula and Mustard greens, both of which we LOVE in our salads. They’ve already sprouted!
I’ve also ordered my garlic seeds for the winter. Garlic sounds like so much fun, too. You plant it before the first real frost, let it stay in the ground all winter, and then in the spring you’ve got garlic coming up right at the beginning of the season. Well, supposedly this is how it happens. I guess we’ll see if that’s the case, but I’m looking forward to trying it.

Wow, you’re way ahead of me. I never even considered fall veggies. My green pepper is trying for round 2 and I keep wondering when I’ll be picking my last zucchini. I dried some tomatoes, but haven’t tried them yet. Hey, I never got a chance to comment on your rainbow bookcase. Looove it!
I adore that last photo.
All of the tomatoes down here died. We got flowers, but the plant just wilted. It seems like the whole neighborhood’s died. I really want to try garlic… Yum!
I’m jealous. I was protecting the last of our vegetables from the frost last night. No way I could have a fall vegetable garden. I do agree, garlic sounds lovely.
You’ve done an excellent job with your garden. I’m not sure how you find the time to give it so much love. Mine has barely had any attention this year. It seems to have survived the neglect thankfully and we’ve had some nice produce from it.
Hey! We have that same strawberry pot!
[...] when I noticed last week there there were some holes in my beloved Brussels Sprouts, I had a good idea of who the culprit might be. There weren’t a ton of holes or anything, so [...]
