Everything You Don’t Want to See if You Planted Bulbs

I returned from our Thanksgiving excursion to find many of these:

vole hole vole hole 2

I can only assume these are vole holes, based on the narrow tunnel down to each bulb. It just looks like it must have been done by something small, mouse sized, and that mouse-sized beast took off with probably a third of the tulip bulbs I put in the back. I’m not happy. And have just finished sprinkling a very stinky garlic-smelling pellet concoction around both bulb beds.

Speaking of which, here’s my other bulb bed, filled with purple and white variations of tulips, irises, hyacinths, crocus (crocuses? crocci?), and paper whites:

Um, yes, for the record, we do NOT want those to have sprouted yet. Not in DECEMBER. Clearly I misjudged the weather and when it would get cold. Some of my bulbs thought it was spring and went ahead and sprouted. Hey, at least they’re still in the yard and weren’t dinner for a little beastie.

So there you have it - two “what not to do’s” for spring bulbs.

Don’t underestimate the vermin.

Don’t plant too early. According to my garden journal I put that front bed in around mid-October. Yeah, way too early. Don’t know what I was thinking there.

  1. Gardening is a process. A process that you are by and large succeeding greatly at. Mistakes are important. :)

  2. oh voles!
at least you got around to planting bulbs. i’ve lived in this house for like, 6 years now and have yet to plant a single bulb. so lame.

hey, thanks for the thoughts on my blogging woes. i appreciate the understanding tons. and i can’t *believe* no one told me about the font issue!!! holy crow. i would never take offense to that kind of thing, so feel free to tell me if something like that comes up again. i had no idea. it’s no that small when i read it. but obviously it looks different on different computers w/diff. browsers, etc.

i know what you mean about “doing” right now. i feel like i am doing a lot. i just don’t don’t have time to post about it. it’s my lifelong challenge to not compare myself to others. so, it’s hard when i see what other blogger/crafter/mothers are doing. and with more kids t’boot. i’m all, “what’s wrong with me?” when it all feels too hard, you know?

i need to turn the corner on some of it. and blog how and when i want. and have that be ok.

  3. p.s. i upped the font size–can you check it for me and let me know if it’s bigger enough?

  4. Oh dear. :/

  5. I can’t remember when I planted my irises, but it was also too early. Now they’re up! We have had some sunny days here the past couple of weeks. So will they come up again in spring. At least I only did about half of my bulbs, still have tulips to go.
